Nantucket with Kids

Nantucket with Kids

Our family has been traveling to Nantucket for over six years, it’s one of our favorite places to visit. Nantucket is an island that’s 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While the island may be small (14 miles in length and 3 1/2 miles wide) it has so much to offer. With its picturesque beaches, quaint cobblestone streets, and rich history, Nantucket is the perfect destination for a memorable family getaway. We will share why Nantucket is a great destination for families with kids and provide ideas for making the most of your trip.

Why Nantucket?

Nantucket offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences that make it an ideal destination for families with kids. The island is home to stunning beaches with calm waters, perfect for little ones to splash and play. Families can also explore the island’s rich history by visiting the Whaling Museum or taking a guided tour of the historic district. We’ve visited in the summer and the fall; both seasons have been enjoyable. Many restaurants are seasonal so be sure to do your research before you go.

Getting There

Getting to Nantucket with kids can be tough, and expensive. You can reach the island by ferry from Hyannis or by plane from various locations on the East Coast. The ferry ride itself is an exciting adventure for kids, offering stunning views of the ocean and the chance to spot marine life along the way. You must book the Steamship ferry in advance if you’re taking a car. If you’re not taking a car it’s easier to book a Hy-line ferry but definitely pack light! Bringing bikes is always a great idea too as bike rentals can be expensive.

Our Recommendations

Nantucket offers a wide range of family-friendly activities that are sure to keep kids of all ages entertained. From bike rides along the scenic paths to picnics on the beach, there is no shortage of things to do on the island. Families can also enjoy kayaking, paddle boarding, or even a whale-watching tour to see these majestic creatures up close.

Where to Stay

When it comes to accommodation, Nantucket offers a range of family-friendly options, from cozy cottages to spacious beachfront resorts. Many hotels and inns on the island cater to families with amenities like playgrounds, kids’ clubs, and family suites. Renting a house or cottage is also a popular choice for families looking for a home-away-from-home experience. We’ve historically stayed at Airbnbs as we are normally traveling with a larger group. We’ve also stayed in the harbor at the Nantucket Boat Basin on my in-laws boat – we’ve docked and we’ve stayed at a mooring. I would highly recommend spending a little more to stay at the dock as it’s easier to get the kids on and off the island. The Nantucket Harbor launches in the harbor to and from the island can also add up and become expensive during your trip.

Dining

If your family loves to eat out there’s no shortage of options on Nantucket to choose from that are kid-friendly. Below are just a few dining options that we enjoy with our kids!

  • Millie’s: is located in Madaket so if you’re staying closer to the harbor you’ll need a car or an Uber/taxi/bike to get there. The relaxed atmosphere is perfect for kids. If you dine outside there are tiny picnic tables for the kids to eat at too. The food, especially the seafood tacos, is some of our favorite on the island. They don’t take reservations so be sure to arrive early to put your name in. Millie’s Market next door sells ice cream for dessert (and merch as well).
  • Sandbar at Jetties Beach: a beachfront, open air restaurant that’s a great warmer weather option for families. There’s a park near the restaurant but unfortunately you cannot see your children from the restaurant/bar. If you want to watch a sunset on Nantucket this is a nice option.
  • The Nantucket Lobster Trap: this is another favorite as it’s very casual, and has indoor and outdoor seating options.
  • The Proprietors: this restaurant has a creative and diverse menu with locally sourced ingredients. We aim to sit outside when we’re with the kids but they have a welcoming environment. While it exudes an elegant and sophisticated ambiance, the restaurant is accommodating to young guests, ensuring a pleasant dining experience for the whole family.

Things to Do with Kids

Secret Candy Store at Force 5 Watersports

Nantucket is brimming with activities that will keep kids of all ages entertained. Here are some must-visit attractions for families:

  • Barlett’s Farm: this is Nantucket’s oldest and largest farm. They have produce, vegetables, merchandise, and a few animals on the property. There’s a small playground in the front which the kids love. It’s right down the road from Cisco Brewers.
  • Children’s Beach: this family-friendly beach is perfect for little ones, with calm waters and a park a few steps away.
  • Cisco Brewers: while the adults enjoy a beer tasting, kids can run around in the spacious outdoor area and enjoy live music and delicious food trucks. Cisco provides a complimentary shuttle service if you’re staying near the harbor too. The shuttle comes every 20-30 minutes at the corner of Chestnut and Federal Streets.
  • Force 5 Watersports: this is a must if you’re traveling with kids. In the back of this outdoor store there’s a secret candy shop for kids. They carry all kinds of candy, and they only accept cash.

  • Nantucket Bookworks: a bookstore in town that’s so quaint and also has toys, gifts, and a small kid’s room.
  • Sconset Bluff Walk: this is a beautiful area on the eastern part of the island. The Bluff Walk is great with kids as it’s a public walking path begins in the village and leads toward Sankaty Head Light. The trail is about 2 miles out-and-back. Parking isn’t always easy but there is street parking in town.
  • Steps Beach: while this beach doesn’t have a lifeguard or facilities like bathrooms it’s one of our favorites. It’s normally quieter, not overcrowded, and usually has gentler surf. Be prepared for many stairs descending to the beach and ascending when you leave.
  • Surfside Beach: this beach has a parking lot, snack stand, bathroom facilities, and lifeguards. It’s a great option to visit with kids but the surf is stronger here and the beach gets crowded.
  • Whaling Museum: a visit to the Whaling Museum is both educational and entertaining for kids, with interactive exhibits and artifacts from Nantucket’s whaling history. If it’s going to rain while you’re on Nantucket save this option for the bad weather day.

Tips for a Successful Trip with Kids

1. Pack Accordingly

Be sure to pack sunscreen, hats, and plenty of snacks and water for your adventures on the island. Rain coats always come in handy too. If we are bringing a car we aim to pack food and drinks but understand we’ll need to grocery shop on the island as well.

2. Plan Ahead

Make reservations for popular activities and restaurants in advance to avoid long waits or disappointment. This includes making your ferry reservations early too!

3. Stay Active

Take advantage of the island’s outdoor activities to keep kids engaged and energized throughout the trip. If you don’t have room to bring bikes, scooters are a great option for kids too.

4. Embrace the Slow Pace

Nantucket is known for its laid-back atmosphere, so be sure to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings with your family.

Bringing kids to Nantucket is a wonderful opportunity to create lasting memories with your loved ones. Explore the island and the different areas it has to offer.
