Broadway Show with Kids

Our family is fortunate enough to live close to NYC so traveling by train to a Broadway show isn’t difficult. I highly recommend taking your kid(s) to a show if you’re visiting NYC. You know your child best and if they’re able to sit for the entirety of a performance. Broadway theaters allow children ages 4 and older to attend shows. Each show varies in that there may be more children at certain shows like Aladdin, versus others.

We typically enter the Broadway lotteries when we’re available so we can enjoy the shows at a lower cost. While you don’t always win it’s a fantastic resource if you’re looking to experience a show and save money, Broadway on a Budget.

Why Choose a Broadway Show for Your Child?

1. Unforgettable Experience

A Broadway show offers a unique and unforgettable experience for you and your child. The theater atmosphere, dazzling lights, beautiful costumes, and talented performers will leave them in awe.

2. Cultural Enrichment

Exposing your child to the arts at a young age can help broaden their horizons and foster a love for culture, and theater. Broadway shows often showcase diverse stories and themes that can inspire important conversations with your child.

3. Educational Value

Watching a live performance can enhance your child’s imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills. It can also introduce them to different forms of storytelling and expression.

Dining

  • Eileen’s Stardust Diner: with a drive-in theater theme, this diner is one of the best themed restaurants in New York City. During our meal we enjoyed live performances from multiple singers who are also the waiters and waitresses. The live performances were impressive and the kids were very engaged. It’s worth a visit but please note they do not take reservations!

Tips for a Successful Broadway Experience with Your Child

1. Choose the Right Show

Consider your child’s interests and age when selecting a Broadway show. Look for family-friendly options with engaging story lines and energetic performances. Wicked, Aladdin, and The Lion King are all great options for children (4 year’s old and above). I would definitely recommend a matinee show over an evening performance for children. Depending on the show, the evening shows can sometimes go as late as 10 p.m.

2. Prepare Them

Before the show, talk to your child about theater etiquette, such as staying quiet during the performance and clapping at the end of each act. This will help them understand and respect the experience.

3. Arrive Early

Arriving early will give you time to find your seats, use the restroom, and grab any snacks or souvenirs before the show begins. Many theaters also offer boosters for your child’s seat. These go quickly at certain shows so be sure to ask before you’re seated.

4. Engage with the Experience

Encourage your child to immerse themselves in the performance by clapping, laughing, and reacting to the show. This will make the experience more enjoyable for both of you.

While it may be nerve racking to bring your kid to a Broadway show it’s definitely worth it. They may surprise you and be engaged throughout the entire performance.
